Clash of United& City: Man fighting for life after street fight With fans on the street


An attack which left a football fan fighting for life was sparked by a row over rival clubs Manchester City and Manchester United.

The victim, 49, was walking with a friend in Manchester in the early hours of Sunday when he got into an argument with two strangers.

One of the men then punched him to the floor, causing him to hit his head on the pavement and knocking him unconscious.

He was taken to hospital with serious injuries and police said he was critically ill.

The Manchester Evening News reports the row in the moments before the assault was a disagreement about Manchester City and Manchester United.

The attack took place around 3.10am on Sunday, August 31, on King Street West between Deansgate and St Mary’s Parsonage.

The two strangers then ran off in the direction of Deansgate, towards Bridge Street.

The assault came a few hours after both Manchester United and City fared poorly in their Premier League clashes. Reds drew 0-0 with Burnley away, while the Blues lost 1-0 to Stoke at the Etihad.

Detectives first issued a witness appeal on Monday and urged anyone with information to come forward.

One of the strangers involved in the football row is described as white, 6ft tall and with a slim build.

The other was Asian, 5ft 7in tall with a medium build and black hair.

Det Con Mike Burns earlier said: “The victim had been enjoying a night out with a friend with both of them deciding to buy some takeaway food.

"As they walked along King Street West, an argument started with two men about football. Shortly after this, the victim was punched. The man was knocked unconscious and is now fighting for his life in hospital.
