Dr Martin Salia, who is a citizen of Sierra Leone but also a permanent US resident, will be treated at the University of Nebraska Medical Centre in Omaha, a federal government source said.
The US Embassy in Sierra Leone said Dr Salia, who will arrive in the US on Saturday afternoon, is paying for the evacuation himself.
The 44-year-old is married to a US citizen and has several children, according to CBS News.
Dr Salia is reported to live in Maryland and had been working at Kissy United Methodist Hospital in Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown, when he caught the deadly virus.
It is not clear if he had been involved in the care of patients with Ebola.
The Nebraska Medical Centre's biocontainment unit is one of only a handful of hospitals in the US with facilities to treat Ebola.
Representatives for the centre said hospital officials could not confirm the report.
The hospital said it would have confirmation only when a plane was en route with a patient on board and "that is not the case right now".
Dr Salia came down with Ebola symptoms on 6 November but the test results came back negative. Another test on Monday was positive.
He is currently in a stable condition at an Ebola treatment centre in Freetown.
