Cletus Onyebuchi Chukwudebelu, for many years, laboured hard to seek pastures new outside the shores of Nigeria, and when his prayers would be answered, he was given passage to South Africa.
In no time, Chukwudebelu began to live big in Johannesburg, where he eventually settled in. one thing that, however, baffles those who knew Chukwudebelu well was that he hardly stays in South Africa. He reportedly shuttles between that country and Nigeria.
It never occurred to anyone that Chukwudebelu would soon turned himself into an international criminal with kidnapping and armed robbery now being his new found vocation, and once he was done with his criminality here, he quickly jets back to his Johannesburg base to return at another time when he was intimated of another large ‘business’ by his Nigeria-based accomplices. It was gathered that once he is in Nigeria, Chukwudebelu stays in Owerri, the Imo State capital, but when he was to carry out his nefrarious ctivities, he operates with a notorious gang of criminals around highbrow areas in Anambra and Enugu states.
Chukwudebelu’s robbery activities had also reportedly brought to him no small affluence. Not long ago, Chukwudebelu was summoned home by his partners-incrime for yet another lucrative deal, but unknown to him, that would be his last before the long arm of the law caught up with him.
Not long ago, Chukwudebelu was back in the country and made his way to Owerri, his base, where he got for himself a Toyota corolla car with Registration No LAGOS US 45 KJA. In no time, Chukwudebelu and his gang were at it again and made some inroads into their target choice areas in Anambra and Enugu states. Apparently the men of the anti-kidnapping unit of the Enugu State command were alarmed by the latest onslaught of the gang soon went after the kingpin.
By this time, Chukwudebelu was already back at his Owerri base enjoying the proceeds of his ‘outing’. But the security operatives continued their search for members of the gang and their effort eventually paid off when they got a lead that their kingpin lives large in Owerri. Armed with that information, the security operatives headed for the Land of Hope.
Of course Chukwudebelu was not going to come cheap for the law enforcement agents. After a couple of days of search for him, Chukwudebelu eventually showed up from his hiding. But Chukwudebelu gave the law enforcement agents a good run for their money as he reportedly engaged them in fierce gun duel. After several minutes of exchange of firepower between him and men of the-kidnapping policemen, Chukwudebelu succumbed to the superior firepower of the law enforcement agents. He reportedly sustained fatal injuries from his encounter with the crime bursts.
On the day of his arrest, Chukwudebelu was driving his Toyota Camry car and hid some dangerous weapons right under the back seat of the car, which he struggled to get hold of when the law enforcement agents confronted him and he wanted to make an escape. Recovered in the car was an AK 47 riffle with several lives cartridges and other ammunition.
An i-phone was also recovered from the car. Spokesman for Enugu State police command, Ebere Amaraizu, speaking on the arrest of the suspect, claimed that Chukwudebelu confessed to his crime and soon pleaded for forgiveness of his past sins promising to turn a new leave if given another chance. Said Amaraizu, “He (Chukwudebelu) was trailed and arrested in Owerri in Imo State recently after a gun battle that ensued which left him fatally injured following a report of nefarious activities.
“He is helping the police in their investigations as he has revealed how he and his gangs have terrorised their victims both here in Nigeria and other parts of the world.” On his part, a subdued Chukwudebelu continued to solicit for police pardon and urged other men in the illicit trade to desist from the act or face the full wrath of the law.
